Drones in Tanzania

TAWIRI received various requests submitted to TAWIRI in some of the research proposals to use Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) or Drones for research and related purposes.

Please find an attached file of a public notice of 11 July 2017 on procedures for all institutions/entities and individuals intending to procure, test or operate/use remotely piloted aircraft or drones in Tanzania from the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA). Briefly, people who want to use drones in Tanzania will have to seek APPROVAL from the Ministry of Defense and National Service (MDNS) followed by obtain AUTHORIZATION from the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA).

However, use of drones for wildlife research especially in protected areas will ALSO be subject to approval by the TAWIRI BOARD after consultation with respective Management Authorities; meaning that APPROVAL from from the MDNS and AUTHORIZATION from TCAA will NOT be an automatic approval for use of drones for wildlife research or in protected areas. In this regard, and to avoid unnecessary costs of purchasing drones, prior consultation with TAWIRI before seeking approval from the MDNS and authorization from TCAA might be useful.

We are looking forward to your usual cooperation in abiding to the stipulated procedures with effect from 11 July 2017. Kindly read the public notice for detailed information through this link to to view the attachment.
