The Directorate of Research Development and Coordination is responsible for development of research programmes and projects of the Institute in line with the Tanzania Wildlife Research Agenda.  The Directorate is also responsible for coordination and overseeing wildlife research carried out by registered Tanzanian as well as foreign researchers.

UNITS AND SECTIONS UNDER THE DIRECTORATE OF RESEARCH EVELOPMENT AND COORDINATION

The Directorate of Research Development and Coordination has the following Units and Sections:-

1. Research Management Section

This section is responsible for receiving applications for conducting wildlife research and applications for renewal of research permits.  The section is also responsible for preliminary screening and summarization of research proposals before submission to the TAWIRI Management, the Joint Management Research Committee (JMRC) and Research Programme Committee (RPC) of the TAWIRI Board for final decision.  The section is also responsible for liaising with COSTECH for research clearance of researchers and writing introductory letters of researchers to respective Management authorities.

2. Research Development Section

This section is responsible for development of research programmes and research projects of the Institute in line with wildlife research agenda in Tanzania.  This is done in collaboration with researchers in Directorates, Centres, Units and research Stations. The aim is to enable researchers at the Institute to carry out various own research projects.  The section is also responsible for identification of calls for research proposals and assist teams to develop competitive proposals in collaboration with local and International researchers.

3. Veterinary and Wildlife Laboratories Section

This section is responsible for wildlife health in the country. The section is responsible for wildlife health research health monitoring as well as other veterinary wildlife management activities in the country e.g. disease investigation, wildlife capture, immobilization, translocation etc.  The section works in collaboration with Veterinary Units of Management Authorities.  The section oversees the two wildlife laboratories of the Institute namely the TAWIRI Veterinary Laboratory located at SWRC in Serengeti National Park and the TAWIRI Molecular Biology Laboratory located at the Head Office in Arusha.  The veterinary section is also responsible for maintenance of the National wildlife biological specimen bank.

4. Inspectorate section

The inspectorate section is responsible for overseeing activities of registered researchers.  The section is also responsible for monitoring everything on wildlife research in the country including detecting unregistered researchers as well as researchers being involved in un-approved activities.  The section is also responsible for awareness creation regarding procedures to be followed in order to conduct wildlife research in the country. The section works in close collaboration with immigration authorities, management authorities and the general public.
